Could we see the end of Super Bowl Parades?

When the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl on Sunday, Wednesday’s parade on Valentine’s Day was supposed to be a joyful occasion. Sadly, it was anything but. According to Robert A. Cronkleton, Sam McDowell, Eric Adler and Michael Wilner of the Kansas City Star, one person was killed and 22 people were shot at a Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Victory rally at Kansas City’s Union Station (pictured above). Of the 22 people who were shot, nine were children.

The person killed was a Kansas City disc jockey named Lisa Lopez-Galvan. She worked for Kansas City’s KKFI Radio.

What happened in Kansas City on Wednesday now leads to an important question. Should there be future Super Bowl Parades? Not just in the National Football League, but in all sports. The bottom line is when you have mass gatherings anywhere in the world today, people need to ask what could happen?

One of the last times we saw tragedy at a mass gathering for a sporting event in the United States was the 2013 Boston Marathon. In this tragic incident where a bomb occurred, three people were killed and hundreds of people suffered serious injuries. Another tragic incident took place at the 1996 Olympic Games in Athens. In this tragedy, one person was killed and 111 people were injured.

Now it should be noted what happened on Wednesday is an active investigation. However, what happened definitely tarnishes the Chiefs’s Super Bowl celebration. The NFL needs to review whether or not future parades should continue going forward.
