The biggest news from the 2024 Miami Open came on Monday when it was reported by Tumaini Carayol of The Guardian that British tennis star Andy Murray suffered a significant injury in the third round on Sunday. In Murray’s 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 loss to Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic, Murray suffered a significant ankle injury.

Murray’s specific injuries were a ruptured anterior talofibular ligament and a ruptured calcaneofibular ligament. It was a surprise to many that Murray continued on after suffering the injuries, and even decided against taping the ankle. Murray actually came very close to winning the match as he only lost 7-5 in the third set tiebreak while hobbling around the tennis court.

Murray is expected to be out a minimum of six weeks. Remember, he rarely plays the French Open. One might have thought Murray might have been a little more active on the clay court season this year, not just because 2024 is expected to be Murray’s last tennis season, but also because the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will be on clay.

At the Miami Open, Murray had two very impressive wins leading up to his tight third round loss. In the first round, Murray beat 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini of Italy, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, and then in the second round, beat the 29th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina, 7-6, 6-3. It was the first set tiebreak that Murray played his most impressive tennis in the match as he won all seven points.

With these latest ailments, one must question, have we seen the last of Andy Murray? The three-time major champion is 36 years old.
