Could the San Francisco 49ers go to a two tight end set for 2020?

The San Francisco 49ers signed tight end Jordan Reed from the Washington Football Team on Monday according to ABC Sports San Francisco. Reed did not play the entire 2019 season with Washington due to concussion issues. He was reportedly injured in the preseason from a hit by Atlanta Falcons safety Keanu Neal, and was never able to recover.

Reed played for the Washington Football Team from 2013 to 2018. In 65 games, he had 329 catches for 3371 yards and 24 touchdowns. A native of New London, Connecticut, Reed had his finest season in 2015 when he caught 87 passes for 952 yards and 11 touchdowns. The following season in 2016, he went to the Pro Bowl as he caught 66 passes for 686 yards and six touchdowns.

During the 2016 NFL playoffs from the 2015 regular season, Reed had a significant game for Washington in the NFC Wildcard. He caught nine passes for 120 yards and one touchdown in a 35-18 Washington loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Now in San Francisco, it will be interesting to see how Reed will be utilized. Will 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan use Reed as a backup for star tight end George Kittle of Madison, Wisconsin, or could the 49ers implement regular multi-tight end formations?

Using two tight ends on the football field during offensive plays has occurred before. It was famously used by New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick to utilize the talents of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. Before the 49ers play Reed at all, they will need to ensure he is cleared mentally. In all, Reed has had seven concussions to date.
