The Indian Wells Masters 1000 series tennis tournament continued on Thursday with more first round tennis action. However, one of the top events was actually the Novak Djokovic media press conference which I attended. Here are some of the highlights.

Djokovic commented on the death of Fred Stolle of Hornsby, Australia, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86. Stolle was a former world number one, who won the French Open in 1965 and the United States Open in 1966.

A: “It is sad news. His legacy will live on for a long time.”

Djokovic addresses about competing in Indian Wells and Miami. He has won Indian Wells five times (2008, 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2016), and Miami six times (2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016).

A: “I wanted to get back on the court sooner rather than later. I am excited to be here, and with Andy (Murray) on board, I hope to have a great, great run in the States.”

Djokovic comments on the Brazilian rising star Joao Fonseca, who won the Argentina Open at the age of 18.

A: “He seems to be handling everything (the attention) really well. I don’t know him personally. From what I have seen on the court, not only how he plays, but how he behaves, there is a very good level of balance and professionalism, like what we have seen from Alcaraz. He has a real potential to be a superstar in this game. Joao comes from Brazil, one of the biggest countries in the world, where the people love tennis and love sports. They are a very passionate people. It would be amazing to have a Brazilian superstar. Gustavo Kuerten was an idol for so many kids.”
