The Carson Wentz experiment in Washington only lasted one season. On Monday according to Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports, the Commanders decided to release Wentz, and in the process clear $26.17 million in cap space.

Wentz only spent one season in Washington after being traded by the Indianapolis Colts on  March 16. In eight games of which seven were starts, he completed 172 passes in 276 attempts for 1755 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Wentz also had 22 rushes for 86 yards and one touchdown.

The Commanders will now appear to go with Sam Howell of Waynesville, North Carolina as their starting quarterback in 2023. The Commanders selected Howell at quarterback in the fifth round (144th overall) in the 2022 National Football League Draft out of the University of North Carolina. Howell got one start for Washington in 2022, and it came in Washington’s final game of the season, a 26-6 Washington win over the Dallas Cowboys. Howell completed 11 of 19 passes for 169 yards and one touchdown. He also had 35 yards rushing and another major score. In the process, Howell was the second best rookie in Week 18, only behind San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.

In addition to playing one season with Washington, Wentz only spent one season in Indianapolis. He previously played five seasons with the Eagles. Wentz was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2017 and won the Super Bowl that same season as the Eagles defeated the New England Patriots 41-33. Wentz however did not play in the Super Bowl as he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the regular season against the Los Angeles Rams.
