Commanders quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick retires at age 39

According to Rogers Sportsnet on Thursday, Washington Commanders quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has retired at the age of 39. The native of Gilbert, Arizona played 17 National Football League seasons with the St. Louis Rams, Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins and the Washington Football Team from 2005 to 2021.
Fitzpatrick was the starting quarterback for the Washington Football Team to begin the 2021 NFL regular season. However, his season was short lived. In Washington’s opening game, a 20-16 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, Fitzpatrick completed three of six passes for 13 yards, and one rush for two yards before dislocating his hip in the second quarter. The injury forced him to miss the remainder of the season.
In 166 NFL career regular season games, Fitzpatrick had 3072 completions in 5060 attempts for 34990 yards, 223 touchdowns, and 169 interceptions. He also had 575 rushes for 2623 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Fitzpatrick had a career high 3905 passing yards with the Jets in 2015. Also that season, Fitzpatrick set the Jets record for most touchdowns in a single season with 31. A year earlier, Fitzpatrick set the Texans franchise record for most touchdown passes in a single game with six on November 30, 2014. He set the record in a 45-21 Houston win over the Tennessee Titans.
Fitzpatrick will be best remembered for being a NFL journeyman at the QB position. In fact, he was the first quarterback to throw four touchdown passes in a game with five different teams. He achieved the feat with the Bills, Titans, Texans, Jets and Buccaneers. Fitzpatrick played his college football with Harvard, before being drafted by the Rams in the seventh round of the 2005 NFL Draft.
