Comeback kid: Bulldogs plotting Josh Reynolds reunion

The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs are looking to bring a favoured son back to Belmore for a 12-month reunion tour, with Josh Reynolds expected to meet with club powerbrokers as soon as mid-August about a comeback contract that would see him reclaim his old blue-and-white number seven jersey.

Reynolds has not kicked a footy since June this year following a split from Hull FC.

It is understood the Bulldogs want Reynolds on a 12-month deal while they test the waters for other, longer-term halfback options. The 33-year-old, who played two grand finals for Canterbury-Bankstown in 2012 and 2014, would have a very lean pay packet. The club is hopeful he would partner Matt Burton in the halves, should the youngster stay.

Fox Sports is reporting the player-club reunion is, in part, due to Reynolds’ agent; the 185-game veteran shares a negotiator (George Mimis) with odds-on favourite future Bulldogs boss Cameron Ciraldo.

Reynolds last played in the NRL in 2020 with the Tigers, who ran 11th.

After a calamitous 22-game stint with the Tigers between 2018 and 2020, the halves star took up a deal with Hull in the Super League. He was supposed to remain there until the end of 2022 and had a third-year option, but was released early on in the 2022 season.

The star’s peak was when he played for Canterbury-Bankstown between 2011 and 2017. He debuted at the Belmore club after coming through their SG Ball team in the late 2000s. He debuted in the blue-and-white in round 11 of the 2011 NRL season, against the Raiders. Reynolds was part of the Bulldogs teams that lost the 2012 and 2014 deciders.

The 33-year-old played four games for New South Wales between 2013 and 2014.
