Italy meets Brazil in the Round of 16, with the most recent Champions League runners-up, Inter Milan, certainly shaping as an early favourite in the battle in Charlotte… though never count Fluminense out.

Here’s the Sporting Base’s guide and insights for this all-important Round of 16 match-up.

How to watch

Expected lineups

  • Inter Milan (3-5-2): Sommer, Darmian, Acerbi, Bastoni, Dumfries, Barella, Sučić, Frattesi, Dimarco, Esposito, Martínez
  • Fluminense (4-3-3): Fabio, Xavier, Silva, Freytes, Renê, Hércules, Martinelli, Arias, Nonato, Canobbio, Everaldo

Inter Milan vs. Fluminense prediction

Inter Milan waved away major worries that had been building around them at the Club World Cup when they defeated River Plate 2–0 to close out Group E’s competitive race as table-toppers (and eliminate the Argentines in the process), and that same methodical control should keep them past Brazil’s Fluminense and into the quarterfinals.

Fluminense have looked quite good in the U.S. and defensively have remained quite solid, but they’ve lacked that extra bite that would potentially carry them through to the last eight of the multi-confederation competition between seasons.

It’s unlikely to be a high-scoring affair, especially with Fluminense able to bring Thiago Silva back into the starting fold; between him and Ignácio, who was player of the match against the Mamelodi Sundowns, Renato Gaúcho’s Brazilian hopefuls shouldn’t concede too many chances — but Inter’s power means they likely will crack eventually.
