Clippers have remarkable comeback on Boxing Day win over the Pistons

Eleven months ago the Los Angeles Clippers came through with the second biggest comeback in National Basketball Association history. The Clippers were once down by 35 points, and came back to beat the Washington Wizards 116-115. 

On Monday, the Clippers’ remarkable comeback came in the last three minutes of the fourth quarter. Los Angeles became only the third NBA franchise ever to come back from a 14-point deficit with three minutes or less in a game.

The Clippers were down 126-112 with two minutes and 53 seconds left in regulation before they outscored the Detroit Pistons 16-2 and force overtime. There the Clippers continued their momentum, by outscoring the Pistons 14-3 en route to a 142-131 victory. Some of the key shots made by the Clippers in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter were three-point shots made by Norman Powell and Nicolas Batum, and a dunk from Amir Coffey.

Los Angeles accomplished the comeback without their star player, Kawhi Leonard, who did not play because of “right knee injury management.” This was a common reason why Leonard did not play one of the two back-to-back games when he won the NBA Finals with the Toronto Raptors during the 2018-19 season. Ironically, the Clippers are playing the Raptors on Tuesday night from Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena, and are expected to have Leonard in the lineup.

On the court on Monday, the Clippers leading scorer was Paul George, who had a double-double (32 points and 11 assists). With the win, the Clippers improved to a record of 20 wins and 15 losses, and are in fourth place in the Western Conference.
