Cincinnati Reds look to contain coronavirus

Since the start of the Major League Baseball regular season in late July, the St. Louis Cardinals have had 18 positive cases of coronavirus, and the Miami Marlins have had 20 cases. As a result, the Cardinals had 16 games postponed and the Marlins had 10 games postponed.

So, when the Cincinnati Reds announced a positive case of coronavirus at the end of last week, many in Major League Baseball were holding their breath. So far, it appears there is only one positive case of COVID-19 in the Reds organization. They did not play Saturday or Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and did not play on Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals.

At this point, it may be too early to tell if the Reds dodged a bullet, but as of now, it appears they are scheduled to take to the field on Wednesday in a doubleheader against the Royals. So far in 2020, the Reds are in fourth place in the National League Central. With a record of nine wins and 11 losses, they are five games back of the Chicago Cubs for the division lead.

Three Reds have had a strong start to the season. Starting pitcher Trevor Bauer, who the Reds acquired from the Cleveland Indians at the end of July in 2019, has been sensational on the mound. He has a record of two wins and zero losses with an earned run average of 0.93, with 32 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings.

Offensively, Nick Castellanos, who the Reds acquired via free agency from the Cubs in the offseason, leads Cincinnati with eight home runs and 19 runs batted in. Meanwhile, Jesse Winkler is batting .365.
