Chuck Daly inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame

Former Detroit Pistons head coach Chuck Daly of Saint Marys, Pennsylvania (pictured far right) has been inducted into the FIBA (International Basketball Federation) Hall of Fame in Madrid, Spain for 2021 according to Michael Houston of Inside the Games on Thursday. Daly, who passed away at the age of 78 of pancreatic cancer in 2009, is being honoured posthumously for guiding the United States to a gold medal in men’s basketball at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona as part of the United States dream team.
The American team that won Olympic gold 29 years ago is arguably the greatest basketball team ever assembled. It included legends Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Clyde Drexler, Karl Malone, and John Stockton.
The United States outscored their opponents by 229 points in only five games in Group A. Their most lopsided Group A win was a 116-48 victory over Angola. They then went on to beat Puerto Rico 115-77 in the quarterfinals, Lithuania 127-76 in the semifinal, and then Croatia 117-85 in the gold medal game. In the final, seven American players reached double digits in scoring with Jordan leading the way with 22 points.
One could argue that Daly had an easy job in winning a gold medal with an incredible group of superstars. However, one must remember that the United States failed to win gold at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens with Larry Brown as a head coach.

While in the NBA, Daly coached the Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, New Jersey Nets, and Orlando Magic. He is best known for coaching the Pistons, as he was Detroit’s bench boss when they won the NBA Finals in 1989 and 1990.
On Wednesday, Steve Nash was inducted into the player category of the FIBA Hall of Fame for 2020. This was Nash’s second honour over the last year as in 2020, he was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.
