Chiefs star offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif breaks his hand in practice

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif of Montreal, Quebec missed all of the 2020 National Football League season because he did a heroic deed in looking after those in need at a long-term care facility in his home province of Quebec. Duvernay-Tardif has the skills, as he already has his medical degree from the prestigious McGill University in Montreal.

Heading into the 2021 NFL season, Duvernay-Tardif was expected to join the Kansas City Chiefs and have an immediate impact. The offensive line was by far the Chiefs’ number one weakness a year ago after a pitiful performance in trying to protect star quarterback Patrick Mahomes in their biggest game of the year, the Super Bowl.

Now it appears Duvernay-Tardif may not be ready to start on Kansas City’s offensive line on September 12. That is because on Tuesday, he broke his hand during practice, and is expected to miss four to six weeks.

The Chiefs are to begin their season against the Cleveland Browns on September 12, in a rematch of the AFC Divisional Playoff, which was won by the Chiefs 22-17.  This game will be best remembered by a head injury for Mahomes, and the fact that backup QB Chad Henne was able to come into the contest and guide the Chiefs to the AFC Championship game against the Buffalo Bills.

How the Chiefs respond to their Super Bowl debacle against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will rest on the success of their offensive line. In addition to having Duvernay-Tardif back, Kansas City also signed Joe Thuney from the New England Patriots, and acquired Orlando Brown in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens.
