Chiefs sign running back Ronald Jones II

The Kansas City Chiefs increased their running back depth on Sunday with the signing of Ronald Jones II to a one-year contract. The signing could see the native of Fort Stewart, Georgia make $5 million according to Jared Dubin of CBS Sports.

The Chiefs signing of Jones II could be considered a little puzzling because the running back situation in Kansas City is even more crowded than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ running back situation at the moment.  In Tampa Bay in 2021, Jones II was behind Leonard Fournette and Giovani Bernard on the depth chart. In Kansas City, Jones II will definitely be behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and will now battle Darrel Williams and Jerick McKinnon for carries.

Jones II played four seasons with the Buccaneers from 2018 to 2021. This past season, Jones II had 101 rushes for 428 yards, and four touchdowns, along with 10 catches for 64 yards. His best game in 2021 came on Boxing Day, as  he had 20 carries for 65 yards and one touchdown, along with two catches for 16 yards in a 32-6 Buccaneers romp over the Carolina Panthers.

Jones’s best National Football League season came in 2020. That year he had 192 rushes for 978 yards and seven rushing touchdowns, along with 28 catches for 165 yards and a receiving touchdown. The season was highlighted by a 192-yard rushing game in which Jones II had a 98-yard run for a touchdown in a 46-23 Tampa Bay win over the Panthers. At the end of the 2020 season, Jones also was part of the Buccaneers team that won the Super Bowl. In Super Bowl LV, Jones had 12 carries for 61 yards, as Tampa Bay trounced Kansas City 31-9.
