Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes named best athlete in men’s sports at 2024 ESPYs

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes of Tyler, Texas was named the 2024 ESPY Award winner for the best athlete in men’s sports on Thursday. This past season in the National Football League, Mahomes was the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player for the third time in five years, as the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22. The ESPY Awards are an annual sports ceremony in Los Angeles, California on ESPN, where athletes from all sports are recognized for their achievements.
In Super Bowl LVIII from Las Vegas, Mahomes completed 34 of 46 passes for 336 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also had nine rushes for 66 rushing yards. Mahomes also received Super Bowl MVP awards in 2020 as the Chiefs defeated 49ers 31-20, and in 2023, as the Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35.
During the 2023 National Football League regular season, Mahomes completed 401 passes in 597 attempts for 4183 passing yards, 27 passing touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He also had 16 rushes for 75 rushing yards.
This is the second straight year Mahomes received the award. He previously was honoured in 2023. You could make the argument that Mahomes was better during the 2022 NFL season where he was honoured by the ESPYs in 2023. During the 2022 NFL season, Mahomes led the NFL with 5250 passing yards, 41 passing touchdowns, and 308.8 yards per game.
Meanwhile, former New Orleans safety Steve Gleason of Spokane, Washington received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award on Thursday. Gleason has been battling ALS since 2011. In a remarkable story, when Gleason was diagnosed, he was given three to five years to live. Thirteen years later, Gleason is still fighting and raising awareness for the horrendous disease.
