Champions League – Liverpool Snatch Late Winner Against PSG

Roberto Firmino’s injury-time winner gave Liverpool victory over Paris St-Germain in their opening Champions League Group C game at Anfield.

Daniel Sturridge, making his first Champions League start in over six years, put Liverpool into the lead with a beautiful header that left the keeper standing still with no answer after 30 minutes at Anfield.

James Milner made it 2-0 from the penalty spot shortly afterwards, only for Thomas Meunier to reply before half-time and Kylian Mbappe to level in the 83rd minute after a subdued second half.

Firmino had to start on the bench after suffering an eye injury in Liverpool’s victory at Tottenham on Saturday but was brought on after 72 minutes and managed to clinch the win for Liverpool.

PSG crumbled on their Champions League travels to Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the past two seasons and their ability to challenge for the competition under new boss Thomas Tuchel was again questioned as they struggled to contain Liverpool’s greater speed and power in midfield.

“Never at any point did we lose our confidence. We played with bravery and strength,” insisted Tuchel. “But this is Anfield. This is what Liverpool do and when they press you it is difficult.”
