Celtics guard Malcolm Brogdon named NBA Sixth Man of the Year for 2022-23

Boston Celtics guard Malcolm Brogdon of Atlanta, Georgia was named the NBA Sixth Man of the Year on Thursday. In 67 games of which none he started, Brogdon averaged 14.9 points per game, 4.2 rebounds per game, and 3.7 assists per game. He had a field goal percentage of .484, three point percentage of .444 and a free throw percentage of .870.

This was Brogdon’s first season with the Celtics. He was traded from the Indiana Pacers in a significant deal on July 9, 2022. 

Brogdon became the third Celtics player in franchise history to win the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award. He followed Kevin McHale of Hibbing, Minnesota who won in back-to-back years in 1983-84, and 1984-85, and Bill Walton of La Mesa, California in 1985-86.

The Celtics meanwhile have a two games to none lead in their first round playoff series with the Atlanta Hawks. They won game one by a score of 112-99 on Saturday, and then 119-106 on Tuesday. In 49 playoff minutes in two postseason games so far, Brogdon has 18 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, one steal and one blocked shot.

Boston is one of two Eastern Conference teams that are undefeated in the postseason so far. The other franchise is the Philadelphia 76ers. On Thursday, the 76ers beat the Brooklyn Nets 102-97 thanks to 25 points by Tyrese Maxey of Dallas, Texas. As a result, Philadelphia has a 3-0 first round series lead. The 76ers overcame a James Harden ejection for kicking. Many are surprised that 76ers star Joel Embiid was not ejected for kicking Nic Claxton’s groin early in the first quarter.
