Celtics become third team in NBA history with multiple 50+ point wins in a season

The Boston Celtics clobbered the Brooklyn Nets 136-86 on Wednesday at the Toronto Dominion Garden on Wednesday. In the process, the Celtics became the third team in National Basketball Association history to win multiple games by 50 points or more in a single season. The other time this season the Celtics won by 50 points or more came on November 1, when they clobbered the Indiana Pacers 155-104, as they won by 51 points.

On Wednesday, six Celtics reached double digits in scoring. They were point guard Payton Pritchard of Tualatin, Oregon (28 points off the bench), guard Derrick White of Parker, Colorado  (27 points), forward Jayson Tatum of St. Louis, Missouri (20 points), center Kristaps Porzingis of Liepaja, Latvia (15 points), small forward Sam Hauser of Green Bay, Wisconsin (14 points), and Canadian forward Oshae Brissett of Toronto, Ontario (11 points off the bench).

The Celtics reached the 30-point plateau in every quarter. They scored 30 points in quarter one, 38 points in quarter two, 33 points in quarter three and 35 points in quarter four.

According to ESPN, the other two teams to win multiple games by 50 points or more in a season were the 1978-79 Milwaukee Bucks and the 1992-93 Sacramento Kings. The Bucks beat the Detroit Pistons 143-84 on December 26, 1978 and the New Orleans Jazz 158-102 on March 14, 1979. The Kings beat the Dallas Mavericks 139-81 on December 29, 1992 and the Philadelphia 76ers 154-98 on January 2, 1993.

It should be noted that even though the Celtics have beaten the Pacers by 50 points this season, they have lost to them twice this season. Indiana beat Boston 122-112 on December 4 and 133-131 on January 8. With the win on Wednesday, the Celtics improve to a record of 43 wins and 12 losses and lead the Eastern Conference.
