Caulfield Preview: Moroney Hoping Plan Pays Off

Several big-name spring contenders will resume in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400 metres) at Caulfield on Saturday but trainer Mike Moroney is confident his galloper Buffalo River will be hard to run down.
The race features several top gallopers resuming headed by Regal Power and Mr Brightside.
Although Buffalo River is only the seventh highest rated horse in the event with Buffalo River, Moroney said he was primed to run a big race.
He said Buffalo River had been set for this race and had residual fitness which would give him an advantage over his rivals.
“This is a target race, and I was hoping he could get his toe into the ground which will be the case,” Moroney said.

“He’s only had a week off after his last run in Brisbane and I thought this would be a great race where he can use his speed and fitness against horses that are coming back from a spell and have their main targets later in spring,” he said.
Moroney said Buffalo River would miss the Group One Memise Stakes also over 1400 metres at Caulfield on August 27 as Tofane is set for that race and he would aim him for the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes instead on September 17.
The seven-year-old gelding failed in three runs in Queensland over winter with his last start performance a sixth in The Glasshouse at the Sunshine Coast on July 2.
Moroney said Buffalo River had pleased him with a win on August 8 in a Flemington jump-out.
