Carlos Alcaraz to face Novak Djokovic in 2023 Wimbledon final

The 2023 Wimbledon final will feature Novak Djokovic of Belgrade, Serbia against Carlos Alcaraz of El Pamar, Spain. Following Alcaraz’s semifinal win against Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, Patrick McEnroe of ESPN stated we will get to see “the number one player in the world against the best player in the world.”

Alcaraz is currently number one in the world after his tournament victory at Queens last month where he beat Alex de Minaur of Australia 6-4, 6-4. Djokovic is considered the best in the world after his victories over the last year at Wimbledon, the Australian Open and the French Open.

Alcaraz will be looking for his second grand slam title. At the 2022 United States Open he defeated Casper Ruud of Norway in the final, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3. Djokovic meanwhile is looking for his 24th grand slam title.

In the semifinals, Djokovic, seeded second, began the day with a straight set 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 win over Italy’s Jannik Sinner, the eighth seed. In a match that lasted two hours and 47 minutes, two key statistics involved the serve and unforced errors. Djokovic had 11 aces compared to Sinner’s eight, and Djokovic had zero double faults compared to three for Sinner. Djokovic also had 21 unforced errors compared to 35 for Sinner.

Alcaraz had a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 semifinal win over the third seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia lasted only one hour and 50 minutes. Alcaraz was very effective at the net as he won 28 points compared to 16 for Medvedev.

Djokovic and Alcaraz have beaten each other once. Alcaraz beat Djokovic 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 in the semifinals of the 2022 ATP Masters 1000 Series Madrid and Djokovic won 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals of the 2023 French Open.
