Carlos Alcaraz enters French Open as world number one

As we approach the second major of the 2023 tennis season, there will be a new world number one in men’s tennis at Roland Garros. According to ESPN on Monday, based on the Italian Open results, Carlos Alcaraz of Spain will be number one, Daniil Medvedev of Russia will be number two, and Novak Djokovic of Serbia will be number three.

Djokovic was at number one prior to the Italian Open, but was upset in the quarterfinals by the seventh seed, Holger Rune of Denmark, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Rune improved from seventh to sixth by reaching the final of the Italian Open, where he lost to Medvedev, 7-5, 7-5.

Alcaraz is first in the world despite a poor showing by the Spaniard in Rome. In the third round, Alcaraz was upset 6-3, 7-6 to Fabian Marozsan of Hungary. The reason why Alcaraz is first in the world is not because of his performance at the Italian Open. It is because of his five wins over the last year. The titles came at the United States Open, the Argentina Open, the Indian Wells Masters, the Barcelona Open, and Madrid Open.

This is the third time in Alcaraz’s career he is world number one. He became the youngest world number one ever at 19 years old and 130 days when he won the US Open in September. Alcaraz then lost his world number one ranking after Djokovic won the Australian Open, but then regained the top ranking when he won Indian Wells. Djokovic had been first in the world since April 3. Djokovic has the record for most weeks first in the world with 387.
