Cancer returns for women’s tennis legend Chris Evert

According to Simon Druker of Yahoo! on Saturday, women’s tennis legend Chris Evert once again has cancer, and will not attend the 2024 Australian Open as  a broadcaster for ESPN as a result. Evert was initially diagnosed with ovarian cancer nearly two years ago. The disease killed Chris’s sister Jeanne in 2020.

Evert’s cancer is in the pelvis. It was in the same area where Evert had cancer before. She is confident because it was caught early, the cells were removed through robotic surgery, and Evert has begun chemotherapy.

The 68-year-old is an 18-time major singles champion as she won the Australian Open twice (1982 and 1984), the French Open seven times (1974, 1975, 1979, 1980, 1983, 1985, and 1986), Wimbledon thrice (1974, 1976, and 1981), and the United States Open six times (1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, and 1982). Evert has also won three grand slam finals in women’s doubles. She won the 1974 French Open with Olga Morozova of the Soviet Union, and the 1975 French Open and 1976 Wimbledon with the great Martina Navratilova, who was representing Czechoslovakia, at the time.

Evert first joined ESPN in 2011. The network broadcasts three of the four majors in the United States. In addition to the Australian Open, they broadcast Wimbledon in July and the United States Open in September. NBC and Tennis Channel share the rights for the French Open.

The 2024 tennis season is also special because it is an Olympic year. Roland Garros will be the host site for the Olympic tennis tournament from July 27 to August 4. Olympic medals will be presented in men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
