Can Alex de Minaur finally beat Jannik Sinner?

The quarterfinals are set to start at the 2025 Australian Open in Melbourne. There is one Australian left in the singles draw–Alex de Minaur of Sydney, the number eight seed.

De Minaur is in his first Australian Open quarterfinal after beating Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 in round one, American Tristan Boyer 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 in round two, Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo 5-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-3 in round three and American Alex Michelsen 6-0, 7-6, 6-3 in round four.

So far, it has been smooth sailing for de Minaur as he has only dropped one set. However, in the previous four matches, de Minaur has only played one seed, and that was Cerundolo at number 31.

There is no doubt de Minaur’s quarterfinal match will be significantly more challenging despite the fact that de Minaur has home court advantage. That is because de Minaur’s next opponent is Italy’s Jannik Sinner, the world number one, and two-time grand slam champion. It was just last year that Sinner won two grand slam titles (2024 Australian Open and 2024 United States Open). Head-to-head, the matchup has not been remotely close with Sinner being 9-0 all-time against de Minaur. Last year, Sinner beat de Minaur thrice–7-5, 6-4 in the Rotterdam final, 6-3, 6-4 in the ATP Finals, and 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals of Davis Cup. Sinner has also beaten de Minaur once before at the Australian Open, 7-6. 6-3. 6-4 in the fourth round of 2022, and will be the heavy favourite to win on Tuesday.

The other three quarterfinal matchups on the men’s side is Ben Shelton vs. Lorenzo Sonego, Novak Djokovic vs. Carlos Alcaraz and Tommy Paul vs. Alexander Zverev. The women’s quarterfinals are Coco Gauff vs. Paula Badosa, Madison Keys vs. Elina Svitolina, Iga Swiatek vs. Emma Navarro and Aryna Sabalenka vs. Anastasia Pavlychuhenkova.
