Camilo Villegas wins 2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship

For the fifth time in his PGA Tour career, Camilo Villegas of Medellin, Colombia has won a tournament. On Sunday, Villegas won the Butterfield Bermuda Championship by posting a score of -24.

Villegas defeated Alex Noren of Sweden by two strokes and Matthias Schmid of Germany by three strokes. Noren had a four-round score of -22, and Schmid had a four-round score of -21.

Villegas had an opening round score of four-under-par 67. That was followed by a score of eight-under-par 63, a third round score of six-under-par 65, and a fourth round score of six-under-par 65. Villegas’s most impressive round was Friday where he had eight birdies and zero bogeys. He birdied the first, second, seventh, eighth, 12th, 14th, 15th, and 17th holes.

Even though Villegas had won five times on the PGA Tour, he has not won a PGA Tour event since 2014. Interestingly, Villegas beat another Swede as Freddie Jacobson finished in second place at the Wyndham Championship. Villegas’s other three PGA Tour titles have been the 2008 BMW Championship in St. Louis, Missouri, the 2008 Tour Championship in Atlanta, Georgia, and the 2010 Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Villegas is known throughout the golf world for getting down very low on the putting green prior to putting. He is one of three Colombians to win on the PGA Tour. He is joined by Nico Echavarria, who won the 2023 Puerto Rico Open, and Sebastian Munoz, who won the 2019 Sanderson Farms Championship.

There is one more PGA Tour event on the 2023 calendar. That is the RSM Classic at St. Simons Island, Georgia, which starts Thursday. Canadian Adam Svensson is the defending champion.
