Cameron Smith posts the best four-round score ever on the PGA Tour

It was a remarkable weekend of golf on the PGA Tour not just for Australia’s Cameron Smith, but for Spain’s Jon Rahm and fellow Aussie Matt Jones too. On Sunday, Smith, Rahm and Jones posted the three best scores ever for a four-round tournament on the PGA Tour. Smith had a -34 in winning the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui. He was followed by Rahm at -33 and Jones at -32. The previous record for the best four-round score on the PGA Tour was -31. That was set by South Africa’s Ernie Els, who shot a -31, also at the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii in 2003.
Smith of Brisbane qualified for the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions by winning the Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside fellow Aussie Mark Leishman of Warrnambool. He posted scores of nine-under-par 64 in rounds two and three, and scores of eight-under-par 65 in rounds one and four. Smith also had three eagles along the way. He eagled the fifth and 15th holes in round one, and the fifth hole again in round two.
Rahm qualified for the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions by winning the 2021 U.S. Open. He posted scores of seven-under-par 66 in rounds one, two and four, and a 12-under-par 61 in round three. Rahm had one eagle, which came on the 15th hole on Saturday.

Jones of Sydney qualified for the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions by winning the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida in March. On the weekend, Jones shot scores of three-under-par 70 in round one, six-under-par 67 in round two, 11-under-par 62 in round three, and 12-under-par 61 in round four. He was a remarkable -23 over the last 36 holes. Jones had four eagles on the weekend. He eagled the 14th and 18th holes in round three, and the 13th and 15th holes in round four. The 13th and 14th holes were on a par four.
Jones became the fourth Australian to win the Tournament of Champions. He followed Steve Elkington of Inverell, who won in 1992 and 1995, Stuart Appleby of Cohuna, who won three straight years from 2004 to 2006, and Geoff Ogilvy of Adelaide, who won in 2009 and 2010.
