Bucks name Adrian Griffin head coach

Adrian Griffin of Wichita, Kansas has been named the new head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks according to Michael Kaskey-Blomain of CBS Sports. Over the last 16 seasons Griffin has been an assistant coach in the National Basketball Association, and now he will get his chance of being a NBA head coach for the first time.

Griffin was previously with the Milwaukee Bucks from 2008 to 2010, the Chicago Bulls from 2010 to 2015, the Orlando Magic from 2015 to 2016, the Oklahoma City Thunder from 2016 to 2018, and with the Toronto Raptors from 2018 to 2023. Griffin was on the Raptors coaching staff when they won their only NBA Finals in franchise history in 2019.

Griffin takes over from Mike Budenholzer of Holbrook, Arizona. Budenholzer was fired on May 4 even though the Bucks had the best record in the NBA this season at 58 wins and 24 losses. Despite the regular season success, the Bucks did not have success in the 2023 playoffs. They lost in five games to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

As a player, Griffin spent nine seasons in the NBA from 1999 to 2008. He was a shooting guard and a small forward. He was with the Boston Celtics from 1999 to 2001, the Dallas Mavericks from 2001 to 2003 and 2005 to 2006, the Houston Rockets from 2003 to 2004, the Chicago Bulls from 2004 to 2005, and again from 2006 to 2008, and with the Seattle Supersonics in 2008. That was the last year the Supersonics were in Seattle before the team moved to Oklahoma City.

In 477 games, Griffin averaged four points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists, mainly in a reserve role. He had a field goal percentage of .438, three-point percentage of .278, and a free throw percentage of .763.
