Bryson DeChambeau of Modesto, California is one round away from winning his second career United States Open title. After previously winning the United States Open title in 2020 at the Winged Foot Golf Course in Mamaroneck, New York, DeChambeau has a three-stroke lead after the third round of the 2024 United States Open title at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina.

DeChambeau currently is at seven-under-par and has a three-stroke lead on Patrick Cantlay of Long Beach, California, four-time major champion Rory McIlroy of Holywood, Northern Ireland, and France’s Matthieu Pavon. Cantlay, McIlroy and Pavon are all at four-under-par.  McIlroy won the 2011 United States Open, 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship and 2014 British Open.

After round one, DeChambeau was in fourth place after posting a first round score of three-under-par. He was behind McIlroy and Cantlay, who were at five-under-par, and Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg at four-under-par. DeChambeau had four birdies and one bogey. He birdied the third, fifth, 13th, and 18th holes, and bogeyed the seventh hole.

After round two, DeChambeau was in a second place tie after posting a second round score of one-under-par and improving his total score to -4. At the time he was tied with Cantlay and Belgium’s Thomas Detry, and one stroke back of the leader Aberg. On Friday, DeChambeau had five birdies and four bogeys. He birdied the sixth, ninth, 12th, 13th, and 18th holes, and bogeyed the second, seventh, 10th, and 15th hole.

Then in round three, DeChambeau had six birdies, one bogey, and one double bogey to move from -4 to -7. He birdied the fifth, seventh, 10th, 11th, 14th, and 17th holes, bogeyed the fourth hole and double bogeyed the 16th hole. DeChambeau had a comfortable four stroke lead until he ran into a difficult 16th hole. Aberg and American Tony Finau were also in contention in round three until they both triple bogeyed the 13th hole.
