Broncos back Kevvie with early extension for ‘continued stability’

Kevin Walters will lead the Brisbane Broncos until at least the end of 2026, barring any cruel twists of fate in the next two years.
The move, which Broncos powerbrokers hope will bring “continued stability for the club going forward,” comes after Walters led Brisbane to a grand final in his last NRL campaign.

Walters already ranks among the longest-serving coaches in Broncos history, with his 78 games in the top job less than two dozen behind Anthony Griffin’s 101. He will easily overtake the second-place boss if he sees out his contract. Only supercoach Wayne Bennett and his whopping 625 games in charge stand above the pair.

“This is the third time we have extended Kev’s tenure as head coach and that’s reflective of the job he is doing in leading positive change across our football program,” Donaghy said of the re-signing.
“This contract extension extends the runway for Kev and his team, giving us continuity and certainty to keep adding to the building blocks that the club has put in place under his stewardship.”
Walters has Brisbane DNA down to the bones, having made 241 appearances for the club in his playing career. He previously captained the team and won five premierships at Red Hill. He was announced as the club’s new head coach in 2020 after Anthony Seibold was sacked.
“It’s no secret how much I love the Broncos, and being able to coach this group for even one game rates as an absolute honour for me,” Walters said.

The Broncos boss then added: “To extend my time as coach for a third time is testament to the hard work of all the players and coaches and staff who work as part of our football department.”
