According to the Associated Press on Wednesday, the total purse for the 2023 British Open is increasing, A year ago the total purse was $14 million, and this year it will now be $16.5 million.
The 2023 British Open champion will also earn $3 million for the first time. When Cameron Smith of Brisbane, Australia won the 2022 British Open, he won $2.5 million. When Collin Morikawa (pictured with the Claret Jug) won the 2021 British Open, he won $2.07 million.
The fact that more prize money has arrived at the majors should come as no surprise. Since the arrival of the LIV Tour, more revenue has been available in total prize money, not just at the majors, but for the entire PGA Tour as well. It will now be interesting to see if there will be an even more significant increase in golf prize money now that the PGA Tour and LIV Tour have controversially merged.
It should be noted that the total prize money at the British Open is still $3.5 million less than the United States Open, which had a purse of $20 million in 2023. When Wyndham Clark had the best score of -10 at the Los Angeles Country Club, he won $3.6 million.
For the 2023 Masters, the total prize money was $18 million. Jon Rahm of Spain won $3.24 million as the winner. Then at the 2023 PGA Championship, the total prize money was $17.5 million. Brooks Koepka won $3.15 million as the winner. The largest purse in golf for a single tournament is currently a whopping $25 million at the Players Championship. This year Scottie Scheffler won $4.5 million as the golfer who finished first.
