Brian Harman maintains convincing lead at 2023 British Open

Brian Harman of Savannah, Georgia was the leader after 36 holes at the 2023 British Open. Now he is the leader after 54 holes.

On Saturday in the third round of the 2023 British Open from Royal Liverpool, Harman posted a round of two-under-par, and improved his score from -10 to -12. He had four birdied and two bogeys. Harman birdied the fifth, ninth, 12th, and 13th holes, and bogeyed the first and fourth holes.

Cameron Young of Briarcliff Manor, New York is all alone in second place at -7. It is interesting that Young or Harman have never won a major title before. Harman’s best result was a second place finish behind Brooks Koepka at the 2017 United States Open. Young’s best result was a second place finish behind Cameron Smith at the 2022 British Open.

While Smith of Brisbane made golf headlines last year at St. Andrews with his record-tying four-round British Open score of -20, it was another Australian who made headlines during round two on Friday. Travis Smyth of Shellharbour, Australia became the first ever golfer to make a hole in one on the 17th hole in the history of Royal Liverpool.

As we head into the fourth round, Harman has a significant amount of confidence of playing high performance golf in Great Britain. Just last year at St. Andrews, he shot a four round score of -13. That was good enough for a tie for sixth place where he posted the same score as two-time major champion Dustin Johnson of Columbia, South Carolina. Johnson won the 2016 United States Open and the 2020 Masters.
