Brewers sign David Phelps from the Cubs

The Milwaukee Brewers signed relief pitcher David Phelps of St. Louis, Missouri to a one year contract worth $1.5 million from the Chicago Cubs. Along with the contract, the Brewers have a $4.5 million option for Phelps in 2021 according to Kyle Lesniewski of SB Nation.

Phelps shared his time in 2019 with the Cubs and Toronto Blue Jays. In 41 games, he had a record of two wins and one loss with a save, five holds and an earned run average of 3.41. In 34 1/3 innings pitched, Phelps gave up 31 hits, 13 earned runs and 17 walks. He had 36 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.34.

Both of Phelps’s wins and his lone save came while with the Cubs. He picked up victories in a 6-3 Cubs win over the Cincinnati Reds on August 11 and in a 5-1 Cubs win over the Seattle Mariners on September 2. Phelps also picked up the save in a 6-5 Cubs win over the Oakland Athletics on August 5.

The Brewers will become Phelps’s sixth Major League Baseball team. In addition to the Cubs and Blue Jays, he has played for the New York Yankees, Miami Marlins and Seattle Mariners.

Phelps’s 2019 season came one year after he missed the entire 2018 Major League Baseball regular season with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He will join a Brewers bullpen that includes closer Josh Hader of Millersville, Maryland and fellow relievers Alex Claudio of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Brent Suter of Chicago, Illinois, Devin Williams of Florissant, Missouri, Eric Yardley of Richland, Washington and Luis Perdomo of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
