Brewers set franchise record for longest winning streak

The Milwaukee Brewers set a record on Saturday for the longest winning streak in franchise history. They won their 14th straight game by beating the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 in 11 innings.

Last week we already discussed Milwaukee being the best team in baseball after 12 straight wins. They were able to extend the streak to 14 games before losing 3-2 to Cincinnati on Sunday. The Major League record for the longest winning streak belongs to the New York Giants, which won 26 straight games in 1916. The previous Brewers franchise record for the longest winning streak was 13 games to begin the 1987 Major League Baseball season. Remarkably, at nine years old, I do remember that streak.

In the Brewers two wins over the Reds on the weekend, Milwaukee won in dramatic fashion. On Friday, it was because of an amazing comeback that led to their 13th straight win. The Brewers were down 8-1 after two innings before scoring nine unanswered runs over the next five innings in a dramatic 10-8 Milwaukee win. Designated hitter Christian Yelich of Thousand Oaks, California led the way with two home runs, three runs scored, four hits and five runs batted in. Then on Saturday, the Brewers’s hero was pinch hitter Andruw Monasterio of Caracas, Venezuela, who hit a dramatic three run home run in the top of the 11th inning.

The fact that Milwaukee is the best team in baseball is the biggest story in baseball. Nineteen teams have a higher payroll than the Brewers. Their total payroll is one third of the New York Mets. At 78 wins and 45 losses, the Brewers are the best.
