Blues left looking for new Origin coach after Fittler quits

New South Wales has been left searching for a new State of Origin coach after six-series helmsman Brad Fittler sensationally walked away from the top job on Thursday.
Fittler took over from Laurie Daley in 2018 and won his first two series in charge before losing to what some had dubbed the “worst Queensland team ever” in 2020. He bounced back the following year before being outclassed and out-coached by fresh-faced Origin coach Billy Salter. Fittler leaves the job with a paltry 9-9 match record.

The Blues legend’s split win-loss record is particularly egregious considering the star power the Blues have commanded this past half-decade. Many called for Fittler’s head after his 2023 series loss.
NSWRL chairman Paul Conlon told media Fittler was still offered the Blues top job for 2024 but turned it down. The shock exit comes just 24 hours after Slater pledged to lead the Queensland Maroons as head coach for at least another three years. NSWRL is now looking for a new helmsman for the state team.
After leaving, Fittler said: “I’ve loved doing the job and I will always love NSW.”
The Sporting Base has heard Andrew Johns and Danny Buderus as well as assistant coach Paul McGregor will also be following Fittler out the door as preparations for the 2024 series begin.
Blues advisor Greg Alexander had already quit earlier this month.
“The board understands and respects [Fittler’s] decision,” Conlon said in a statement. “Freddy was a legend as a player and returned to coach the team at a time when his state needed him. He enjoyed immediate success and his series win in 2021, which included record score lines in Townsville and Brisbane, will go down in NSW Blues history.
“He also contributed through other programs including his Hogs motorcycle rides in regional NSW which played a big part in uniting the state.
“He holds a special place in NSW Rugby League history.”
