Black Book: Horses You Must Follow From Randwick 6/9

The replays and sectional times have been reviewed from Saturday’s Randwick meeting filled with future spring winners. Our analyst has picked out a Baker filly whose run looks to have slipped under the radar, an import that looks right on track for the Cups and a pair of sprinters that will be hard to beat in future Everest lead up.

Within the Law

I want to be with the Baker filly as they get out in trip in the 3yo fillies series if she can draw middle gates. She was never a bet sticking to 1200m 2nd up and having to deal with the outside gate to go with her settling pattern. She settled last and worked home solidly without threatening to finish 1.2L 5th recording 33.99s and 11.62s final 600m and 200m sectionals, which were both the quickest for the race. The winner Apocalyptic will likely start favourite in the G2 Tea Rose over 1400m at Randwick in a fortnight but I feel Within the Laws run will go under the radar.

Sir Delius

The Waterhouse/Bott staying import was sensational over an unsuitable 1600m 1st up. He was stuck wide without cover on-speed and overracing before some questionable team riding allowed him to find cover at the 800m. From there he relaxed and produced a brilliant final 600m and looked the winner at the 100m only to run a game 0.1L 2nd to the brave Lindermann. His last 600m of 33.78s was only 2nd to Ceolwulf settling further back. He looks a great play in early Cups markets and could potentially target a Cox Plate on route.

Lady Shenandoah

The obvious horse to be following out of the Randwick meeting. She stepped out for her first prep trained as a sprinter and looks to have what it takes to target the Everest. She jumped on terms from the inside draw and had tracked into the race nicely taking inside runs to the turn. From there she was strung up all over heels from the 400-100m and by the time she saw clear running race winner Headwall had gone well past her. She jumped out of the ground and charged home to finish 0.1L 2nd and only needed another stride. There’s no doubt she puts multiple lengths on them with even luck.

She will be better suited going from set weights with penalties back to weight for age where she would meet the winner 2.5kg better at the weights. She is now deservedly hard in the market for the Everest. My only concern is that a wet track may be required to beat Hong Kong star Ka Ying rising and her wet track record of 2: 0-1-1 has to be a query. She is no doubt the horse to beat in the G2 Shorts in a fortnight.

Headwall

The G3 Concorde winner’s run was full of merit on a day where nothing won down the outside. He settled a pair forward of the rear and was in a perfect position to produce his brilliant finish, something he hadn’t been afforded when placing in the Quokka, G1 TJ Smith, G1 Newmarket and G1 Oakleigh Plate in the autumn. His 32.55 final 600m was sensational. Lady Shenandoah was the tragedy but but this guy is in play wherever he lands next.
