Bianca Andreescu tears tendon in ankle at 2023 Miami Open

According to Rogers Sportsnet on Wednesday, 2019 United States Open champion Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada tore two ligaments in her left ankle in her fourth round match against Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia. At the time of the injury, Alexandrova was leading the match 7-6, 0-2.

This was the latest of numerous injuries and health issues Andreescu has had in recent years. She has experienced a broken foot, a left adductor injury, a right ankle injury, back injury, shoulder injury, knee injury, neck injury,  mental health issues, and coronavirus. The injury on Monday was significant because Andreescu experienced the most pain she has ever experienced in her entire life, and needed a wheelchair to help get her off the court.

There is no timetable for Andreescu’s return to women’s tennis at the moment. All we know now is she will be out indefinitely. This is the second straight year an elite tennis player went down on the tennis court in significant pain with torn tendons in  the ankle. A similar injury happened a year ago at the French Open to Germany’s Alexander Zverev.

Alexandrova, the 18th seed, will now face another major champion, Petra Kvitova of Czechia, the 15th seed, in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Kvitova won Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014. Jessica Pegula of the United States, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, and Sorana Cirstea of Romania have already reached the semifinals.

On the men’s side, Italy’s Jannik Sinner is the first semifinalist. He defeated Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland 6-3, 6-1 in the first quarterfinal matchup.
