Barbora Strycova officially retires and announces second pregnancy

Czech tennis star Barbora Strycova made headlines on Monday with the news of her second pregnancy and second retirement from professional women’s tennis according to wtatennis.com. Two years ago, Strycova retired for the first time as she gave birth to her first son Vincent.
Strycova then made a doubles comeback in 2023 at the age of 37 with partner Su-wei Hsieh of Chinese Taipei, which turned out to be extremely successful. Strycova and Hsieh teamed up to win Wimbledon, where they beat Elise Mertens of Belgium and Storm Hunter of Australia in the final, 7-5, 6-4. This was the second time Strycova won a grand slam women’s doubles title. She also teamed up with Hsieh to win Wimbledon in 2019. There Strycova and Hsieh beat Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and Yifan Xu of China 6-2, 6-4.
The 2019 Wimbledon season was a magnificent tournament for Strycova in singles and doubles. In addition to her doubles title, Strycova reached the semifinals of Wimbledon in singles. There she lost to Serena Williams of the United States, 6-1, 6-2. It has been quite the week for Williams, as on Friday, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York.
In Strycova’s magical run to the semifinals of Wimbledon four years ago, she defeated four seeded players. Strycova upset the 32nd seed Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine 6-3, 6-2 in the first round, 2016 French Open semifinalist and number four seed Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands 7-5, 6-1 in the third round, 2018 Australian Open semifinalist and number 21 seed Elise Mertens of Belgium 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the fourth round, and the 19th seed and three-time grand slam semifinalist Johanna Konta of Great Britain 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Konta, who retired in 2021, reached the semifinals of the Australian Open in 2016, Wimbledon in 2017, and the French Open in 2019.
