Barbora Krejcikova of Brno, Czech Republic has won a grand slam women’s singles title for a second time. On Saturday, Krejcikova defeated Jasmine Paolini of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, Italy 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

In Saturday’s final, Krejcikova broke Paolini three times in seven opportunities. Krejcikova also won 73% of her first serve points and 69% of her second serve points. Paolini won 65% go her first serve points and 55% of her second serve points.

Krejcikova became the fourth Czech woman to win Wimbledon. The others were the late Jana Novotna of Brno (1998), Petra Kvitova of Bilovec (2011 and 2014) and Marketa Vondrousova (2023).  It should be noted that Martina Navratilova was a native of Czechoslovakia, but did not win a grand slam title representing her birth country. After the 1975 United States Open, Navratilova defected from Czechoslovakia, and sought political asylum in the United States. She was allowed to represent the United States before becoming an American citizen in 1981. In that time Navratilova won Wimbledon in 1978 and 1979.

Until Saturday’s win, Krejcikova generated fame from three years ago. She won the women’s singles title at the 2021 French Open as an unseeded player and also won the women’s doubles title. In singles action, Krejcikova beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Then in women’s doubles, Krejcikova teamed up with Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic to beat American Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Poland’s Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-2. Ironically, Siniakova teamed up with American Taylor Townsend to win the 2024 Wimbledon women’s doubles championship. In the final on Saturday, Townsend and Siniakova defeated Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and Erin Routliffe of New Zealand, 7-6, 7-6.
