Bailey Tardy leads 2023 United States Women’s Open after round two

Bailey Tardy of Peachtree Corners, Georgia is the stunning leader of the 2023 United States Women’s Open from the Pebble Beach Golf Course in northern California after round two. Tardy is at -7 and has a two-stroke lead over American Allisen Corpuz and South Korea’s Hyo-Joo Kim.

If you have not heard of Tardy, you are not alone. One reason why Tardy’s second round lead is so surprising is because of her world ranking. She is 455th in the world.

One reason why Tardy is in the lead is because she has collected two eagles to date. Both eagles have come on the same hole–the par five sixth hole.

Tardy had a first round score of three-under-par 69 and a second round score of four-under-par 68. In round one, Tardy birdied the seventh and 18th holes, and bogeyed the 16th hole. In round two, Tardy birdied the first, third, seventh, and ninth holes, and bogeyed the fifth and 14th holes.

One thing to keep in mind heading into round three on Saturday is that Tardy has had more success on the front nine than the back nine. In holes one through nine, Tardy has been -8. However on holes 10 through 18, she has only been +1.

Corpuz of Honolulu and Kim of Wonju-si are both at five-under-par. Kim is a major champion from the past as she won the 2014 Evian Championship in France. This was Kim’s first of five LPGA Tour wins. Corpuz and Tardy do not have LPGA Tour victories. One thing to keep in mind is that Tardy has only been under par in two LPGA events in 2023. She was  a -2 at the LOTTE Championship in April, and -1 at the Shoprite LPGA Classic in June.
