According to TMZ Sports on Monday, 2022 Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios of Canberra, Australia has withdrawn from the 2023 Australian Open because of a knee injury. In a press conference that dominated the tennis headlines on the first day of the first major of 2023, Kyrgios’s discussed a small tear and cyst in his meniscus.

There were high hopes for Kyrgios at the 2023 Australian Open. The 21st ranked player in the world had a record of 37 wins and 10 losses in 2022 and won the 2022 Washington Open where he beat Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan 6-4, 6-3 in the final.

Kyrgios continues a long list of notable names who have withdrawn from the Australian Open. They include Marin Cilic of Croatia (knee), Venus Williams of the United States (undisclosed injury), Naomi Osaka of Japan (pregnancy), Reilly Opelka of the United States (undisclosed reason), Carlos Alcaraz of Spain (right leg), Gael Monfils of France, Kamil Majchrzak of Poland (suspended for doping), Simona Halep of Romania (doping), Daria Saville of Australia (torn anterior cruciate ligament), Qiang Wang of China (shoulder), Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain (undisclosed), Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia (knee), Paula Badosa of Spain (abductor), and Saisai Zheng of China (wrist).

Three Australian Open wildcards won the opening day in the men’s tournament of the 2023 Australian Open on Monday. Jason Kubler of Brisbane defeated Sebastien Baez of Argentina 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. John Millman of Brisbane beat Marc-Andrea Huesler of Switzerland 6-7, 7-5, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3. Rinky Hijikata of Sydney defeated German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.

Meanwhile on the women’s side, one Australian woman was victorious. Wildcard Olivia Gadecki of the Gold Coast beat Polina Kudermetova of Russia 7-5, 6-1. The win for Gadecki was impressive when you consider the fact her world ranking is 199th.

On Monday, two seeded players were knocked out in women’s singles and two more seeded players were knocked out in men’s singles. In women’s singles, Bianca Andreescu of Canada, the 2019 United States Open, beat the 25th seed Marie Bouzkova of Czechia, 6-2, 6-4, and Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine beat 28th ranked Amanda Anisimova of the United States 6-3, 6-4. In men’s singles, Lloyd Harris of South Africa beat 17th ranked Lorenzo Musetti of Italy 6-4, 6-1, 6-7, 2-6, 7-6, and Jiri Lehecka of Czechia beat the 21st ranked Borna Coric of Croatia 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.
