Australian NBA great Andrew Bogut retires at age 36

Andrew Bogut of Melbourne, Australia, one of the most notable Australians to ever play in the National Basketball Association, has retired at the age of 36 according to the Associated Press on Monday. Bogut had been hoping to compete at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, but with the delay of the Olympic Games by a year, and the fact that the powerful center has been battling back and ankle injuries, he decided now was the time for him to retire.

Bogut is best known for being the first overall pick by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2005 NBA Draft. At the time, Bogut had just finished up his sophomore season with the University of Utah. In 2004-05, Bogut led the National Collegiate Athletic Association with 26 double doubles, and was the Naismith College Player of the Year.

Bogut would go on to play 14 seasons in the NBA with the Bucks, Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Los Angeles Lakers. He did not play in the 2019-20 NBA season.

A winner of the NBA Finals with the Warriors in 2015, Bogut averaged 9.6 points per game, and 8.7 rebounds per game. He had a field goal percentage of .535, a three-point percentage of .120, and a free throw percentage of .557.

Bogut also was known for his blocking skills. He had 1.5 blocks per game in his career, and led the NBA with 2.6 blocks per game while with the Bucks in 2010-11.

Bogut also averaged a double double for three straight seasons with the Bucks from 2009-10 to 2011-12. He had a career-high 15.9 points per game in 2009-10, and a career-high 11.1 rebounds per game in 2010-11.
