Australia reaches semifinals of 2023 Davis Cup

Australia is in the semifinals of the 2023 Davis Cup in Malaga, Spain. On Wednesday, Australia defeated the Czech Republic two matches to one, and will face Finland in the semifinals. Australia reached the finals of the 2022 Davis Cup Finals before losing to Canada.
The Aussies on Wednesday were led by Alex de Minaur of Sydney in singles, and Matthew Ebden of Perth and Max Purcell of Sydney in doubles. De Minaur defeated 2023 Australian Open quarterfinalist Jiri Lehecka 4-6, 7-6, 7-5, while Ebden and Purcell defeated Lehecka and Adam Pavlasek 6-4, 7-5.
This was the first time ever De Minaur faced Lehecka. The Australian now has a record of 14 wins and seven losses in 21 Davis Cup matches in his career.
The big story of the 2023 Davis Cup to date has clearly been Finland. No one expected the Finns to reach the final four of this prestigious global tennis tournament, but that is where they find themselves.
Australia meanwhile has won 28 Davis Cup finals in their career. However, Australia has not won the Davis Cup in two decades. Their last win came in 2003, where they beat Spain three matched to one on grass in Melbourne. The Australians at the time were led by Lleyton Hewitt and Wayne Arthurs of Adelaide, Todd Woodbridge of Sydney, and Mark Phillippoussis of Melbourne. Davis Cup matches at the time were best of five. Since 2018, they have been best of three. Over the years, the tournament has gone to a week long event to determine the champion and takes place in a set location, rather than one nation getting home court advantage.
