Australia reaches second round qualifying of the 2025 Davis Cup

Australia has qualified for the second round of qualifying for the 2025 Davis Cup. On Sunday in Stockholm, Sweden, the Australians swept the Swedes three matches to none in the first round of Davis Cup qualifying. Australia received Saturday singles wins from Alex de Minaur and Alexander Vukic of Sydney, and a Sunday doubles win from Matthew Ebden of Perth and John Peers of Melbourne.

On Saturday, de Minaur continued his momentum from the 2025 Australian Open where he reached the quarterfinals. He defeated Mikael Ymer 7-5, 6-1. Ymer was suspended in 2023 a year and a half for missing three doping tests.

Vukic was up next and beat Leo Borg, son of Swedish legend and 11-time singles champion Bjorn Borg, 6-4, 6-4. Australia then clinched the tie on Sunday, as Ebden and Peers beat Filip Bergevi and Andre Goransson 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.

Next up for Australia in the second round is Belgium, who beat Chile on the weekend. Australia will have the choice of ground when the two nations meet in September. Australia has won four of seven meetings all-time against Belgium.

The fact that Belgium beat Chile on the weekend did not come without controversy. In the fourth match of the weekend, Belgium’s Zizou Bergs had broken Chile’s Cristian Garin 6-5 in third set when Bergs celebrated by jumping toward the team bench. In the process, Bergs bumped Garin. A doctor came on to the court to assess Garin, and claimed he was fit to continue the match. Garin disagreed, and was given three code violations for refusing to play. Bergs was awarded the 12th game in the third set and the match. Other round two matchups are the Netherlands versus Argentina, Hungary versus Austria, Germany versus Japan, the United States versus the Czech Republic, Denmark versus Spain and Croatia versus France.
