Australia qualifies for the 2022 Davis Cup

Australia has qualified for the 2022 Davis Cup. This past weekend at the Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney, Alex de Minaur of Sydney, Australia won twice. He defeated Zsombor Piros 7-5, 6-2 on Friday, and then Marton Fucsovics 7-6, 6-4 on Saturday.

Team Hungary held their own on the weekend. They in fact took a 2-1 lead after Fucsovics defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis 7-6, 1-6, 6-3, and then Fabian Marozsan and Mate Valkusz upset John Peers and Luke Saville, 6-4, 6-4. Then de Minaur beat Fucsovics, and then Kokkinakis beat Piros 6-4, 6-4 in the deciding match.

Australia is one of 15 countries that have advanced to the Group Stage. They are joined by Argentina, Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Serbia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United States.

Australia needed to participate in Davis Cup qualifying this past weekend because they were not in the 2021 Davis Cup final or among the two wildcard nations selected by the International Tennis Federation. In the 2021 Davis Cup Final, Russia defeated Croatia. However Russia has been disqualified from the 2021 Davis Cup because of their recent invasion of the Ukraine.

The 2022 Davis Cup will be different from 2021. This year players will participate in a group stage in September. There are four groups, and the top two nations in each group advance to the knockout round in November.

In other Davis Cup qualifying action, Canada sent its C team to the Netherlands and got clobbered by the Dutch as they failed to win a set. Austria meanwhile clearly missed Dominic Thiem in their loss to South Korea.
