AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am to have no amateurs in 2021

One of the most unique golf events every year on the PGA Tour is the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in northern California. On an annual basis, the world’s best golfers regularly play with entertainers, and many celebrities in society. Well in 2021, the PGA will make a stop at Pebble Beach next month, but minus the amateurs.

Traditionally the cutline for the Pro-Am is after 54 holes instead of 36. That is because golfers compete on three different courses. However, in 2021, the event, according to Bob Harig of ESPN, will be held over two courses instead of three, as the Monterey Peninsula Country Club will not be used. Golfers will continue to play at the Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill.

Each celebrity pays the PGA Tour $30,000 to participate. Among the most well known celebrities who have been involved over the years include comedians Bill Murray, George Lopez, and Ray Romano; actors Clint Eastwood (chairman of the foundation), and Mark Wahlberg; former American secretary of state Condoleeza Rice; sports broadcaster Chris Berman; and many well-known athletes in the sports community including Justin Verlander, Wayne Gretzky, Tony Romo, Peyton Manning, Kelly Slater, and Aaron Rodgers.

Unfortunately, celebrities are not considered essential at this time. We are still in a pandemic, and even though the PGA is trying to continue with events, this is not the real time for laughter and joy.

The PGA Tour made the right call in not sending amateurs to Pebble Beach. There have been a staggering 398,155 deaths of coronavirus in the United States, including 32,290 Californians. Hopefully, the tournament will be back to normal in 2022.
