Ashleigh Barty reaches the women’s final of the 2022 Australian Open

Ashleigh Barty of Ipswich, Australia is in the Australian Open final for the first time. On Thursday in the women’s semifinals, she defeated Madison Keys of the United States, 6-1, 6-3. Barty will now face another American, Danielle Collins in the final.

It was a dominant semifinal performance for Barty, who dictated play from the onset. In the opening game, Barty broke Keys and never looked back. Barty won 65 of the 104 points, and won four of the eight games that Keys was serving.

Just how dominant has the world number one been so far en route to the final? Well, Barty lost only one game in her first round match, two games in her second round match, five games in her third round match, seven games in her fourth round match, two games in the quarterfinals, and four games in the semifinals.

It was almost as equally a dominant performance by Collins meanwhile, as she beat 2020 French Open champion Iga Swiatek of Poland, 6-4, 6-1. Collins had seven aces compared to only one for Swiatek.

Head-to-head, Barty has won three of their four prior meetings. Barty won their only prior meeting at a major, as she won 7-5, 6-1 in the second round of the 2019 French Open, a tournament Barty was victorious at.

Aussie tennis fans are also extremely excited about men’s doubles. That is because there will be an all-Australian men’s doubles final on Saturday, following the women’s singles final. Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis will play Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell.
