Ashleigh Barty, Hubert Hurkacz win 2021 Miami Open

The winners of the 2021 Miami Open were determined on the weekend, with Ashleigh Barty of Ipswich, Australia winning the women’s singles draw, and Hubert Hurkacz of Wroclaw, Poland winning the men’s singles draw. In the women’s final on Saturday, Barty, the number one seed, defeated Bianca Andreescu of Canada 6-3, 4-0. In the second set, Andreescu withdrew from the match because of an ankle injury. Then in the men’s final on Sunday, Hurkacz beat Jannik Sinner of Italy, 7-6, 6-4.
In Barty’s win over Andreescu, the 24-year old superstar won 81% of her first-serve points. Andreescu meanwhile only won 45%. Barty also broke Andreescu four times, while Andreescu was only able to break Barty once.
Barty has now won 15 WTA career finals. The most significant title came at the 2019 French Open, where she beat Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic, 6-1, 6-3. This was also Barty’s second win this season. The first came at the Yarra Valley Classic in Melbourne, which was a preparation tournament leading up to the Australian Open. Barty defeated Garbine Muguruza of Spain in the final, 7-6, 6-4.

The fact that Barty has reached a high level in 2021 is extremely impressive when you consider the fact that she missed most of 2020, due to concerns related to coronavirus, and not feeling that she was ready to play high-performance tennis due to lack of preparation time with her coach. Among the tournaments Barty missed were the French Open and U.S. Open.
Hurkacz meanwhile won his first career ATP 1000 series event, and third ATP event of his career. Hurkacz’s first two ATP wins were also in the United States. He won the 2019 Winston-Salem Open in North Carolina, by beating Benoit Paire of France in the final, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Then he beat American Sebastian Korda 6-3, 6-3 in the final of Delray Beach earlier this year.
