Ashleigh Barty and Ajla Tomljanovic reach the quarterfinals of Wimbledon

We are down to eight in the women’s draw of Wimbledon, and two Australian women have reached the quarterfinals. In the final Manic Monday after the final Middle Sunday at Wimbledon ever without tennis, Ashleigh Barty of Ipswich defeated French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-3, and Ana Tomljanovic defeated British teenage-sensation Emma Raducanu 6-4, 3-0. Raducanu had to withdraw due to a medical issue.
With the win over Krejcikova, Barty, who is the number one seed, reached the quarterfinals for the first time ever in her career at Wimbledon. The only major now where Barty has not reached the quarterfinals is the United States Open. This is the second time in 2021 that Barty has reached the quarterfinals of a major. At the Australian Open back in February, she reached the final eight before losing 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 to Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic.

Now in an interesting twist, Barty will face Tomljanovic in an all-Australian quarterfinal on Tuesday. This will be their first-ever meeting head-to-head. In playing Barty, who won the 2019 French Open, Tomljanovic will be looking for her second win in the tournament over a past French Open champion. In the third round, Tomljanovic won a heated battle over 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. The reason why this particular match was heated is because Tomljanovic did not believe Ostapenko’s medical timeout was legitimate and complained to the chair umpire about it. Then when the match was completed, Ostapenko and Tomljanovic had a heated exchange at the net.
In other women’s quarterfinal action on Tuesday, the eighth seed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic will face Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland, second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will face 21st-ranked Ons Jabeur of Tunisia, and the 19th-ranked Muchova will face 25th-ranked Angelique Kerber of Germany. Like Tomljanovic, Golubic was unseeded.
