Aryna Sabalenka of Minsk, Belarus, is a grand slam champion for the fourth time in her tennis career. On Saturday afternoon at Flushing Meadows, New York, Sabalenka, the world number one, defeated American Amanda Anisimova, the eighth seed, 6-3, 7-6.

One key statistic in the match was double faults. Sabalenka only had two double faults, while Anisimova had seven double faults. Sabalenka also made the most of her break point opportunities. She had six break point chances, of which she broke Anisimova five times. Another key statistic was second serve winning percentage. Sabalenka won 68% of her second serve points, while Anisimova only won 48%.

Anisimova was significantly better on Saturday than her first grand slam women’s final. In July, Anisimova was beaten 6-0, 6-0 by Poland’s Iga Swiatek in the final of Wimbledon.

Sabalenka defeated three seeded players en route to taking the title. In addition to Anisimova, Sabalenka beat the 31st seed, and 2021 United States Open finalist, Leylah Annie Fernandez of Canada, 6-3, 7-6, in the third round, and 2024 United States Open finalist, Jessica Pegula of the United States, the fourth seed, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

In the WTA rankings, Sabalenka is the clear world number with 11225 points, and Swiatek is second with 7933 points. This was the third grand slam final Sabalenka reached in 2025. She lost 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 to American Madison Keys in the final at the Australian Open, and 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 to American Coco Gauff in the final at the French Open.

Sabalenka’s grand slam titles have all been in the last 20 months. She also won the 2023 and 2024 Australian Open, and the 2024 United States Open.

This was the first grand slam singles title for Sabalenka with fellow Belarusian tennis star Max Mirnyi as her coach. Mirnyi was hired on August 11 according to Cristhian Avila of tennisuptodate.com. Mirnyi won 10 grand slam doubles titles.
