Aryna Sabalenka moves into world number one spot for second time

For the second time in her career, Aryna Sabalenka of Minsk, Belarus has moved into first place in the Women’s Tennis World Rankings. The fact that Sabalenka has taken over 2024 French Open champion Iga Swiatek of Poland into the top spot worldwide in women’s tennis should be no surprise whatsoever. That is because Swiatek has not played an event since losing in the quarterfinals to American Jessica Pegula 6-2, 6-4 in the United States Open.

Sabalenka deserves to be world number one. The bottom line is when you are the only player to win multiple grand slams in the same calendar year, you should automatically be given the number one spot. Sabalenka has won the Australian Open, United States Open, Cincinnati Open, and the China Open in 2024.

In the WTA rankings, Sabalenka’s lead over Swiatek is currently very slim. It is only at 41 points. Sabalenka has 9706 points, compared to 9665 points for Swiatek. One must realize that Sabalenka has a very good chance of ending the year at number one. That is because Swiatek has a lot of points to defend, being last year’s champion of the WTA Finals. Last year’s WTA Finals were in Cancun, Mexico. This year they are in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

In order for Swiatek to regain the number one spot, she has made a coaching change. Gone is Tomasz Witorowski of Poland, and in is Wim Fisette of Belgium. Fisette has coached Naomi Osaka of Japan, Kim Clijsters of Belgium, and Angelique Kerber of Germany in the past. As a coach, Fisette has won six grand slam singles titles.
