Arthur Fils wins 2024 Hamburg Open

Arthur Fils of Courcouronnes, France is the winner of the 2024 Hamburg Open. On Sunday, the 20-year-old phenom, who just so happens to be ranked 20th in the world, defeated the reigning Olympic champion, Alexander Zverev of Germany, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6. It was a dominant tie break for Fils, who beat Zverev 7-1.

One of the biggest stories of the match was missed opportunities for Zverev, the tournament’s number one seed. Zverev had a remarkable 22 break point chances, of which he only converted once.

There was also some controversy in the final. Fils, who was seeded fifth, delivered an underarm serve, which upset Zverev. The German was later quoted as saying, Fils had “zero respect.” Near the end of the match Zverev and Fils had a verbal confrontation as Fils was walking past Zverev while Zverev was sitting on his chair during the changeover. Chair umpire Timo Janzen then got out of his chair, separated the players, and guided Fils back to his seat. It is interesting that Fils dominated the match from that point forward.

This is Fils’s second ATP title. The first came at the 2023 Lyon Open in France, where he beat Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina 6-3, 7-5 in the final.

Zverev was the defending champion of the Hamburg Open. A year ago he beat Laslo Djere of Serbia in the final, 7-5, 6-3.

This is the last notable tennis tournament before the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. At the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, Zverev defeated Karen Khachanov of Russia in the final, 6-3, 6-1. While Khachanov will not be in Paris, world number five and 2021 United States Open champion Daniil Medvedev, who will be an individual neutral athlete, will be at the Olympic Games.
