Annika Sorenstam to make a surprise return to the LPGA Tour

According to Ben Morse of CNN on Wednesday, women’s golf legend Annika Sorenstam of Bro, Sweden is making a return to the LPGA Tour. The news could be considered a surprise, not only because Sorenstam is now 50 years of age, (and has not played on the LPGA Tour since 2008), but also because she recently accepted the position as president of the International Golf Federation.

Sorenstam will reportedly make her return for the 2021 Gainbridge Championship in Orlando, Florida from February 25-28. This will be the second Gainbridge Championship, as it was first held in January of 2020, with fellow Swede Madelene Sagstrom being victorious.

The reason why Sorenstam left the game of golf at age of 38 was because she wanted to start a family with her future husband, Mike McGee, who is the son of four-time PGA Tour winner Jerry McGee of New Lexington, Ohio. Sorenstam and McGee have since had two children together.

While on the LPGA Tour from 1994 to 2008, Sorenstam was the most dominant golfer in the world. She won 10 major titles, including the ANA Inspiration, Women’s PGA Championship, and US Women’s Open three times each. Sorenstam’s 72 LPGA Tour wins are also the third most of all-time. The only golfers with more LPGA wins are Kathy Whitworth of Monahans, Texas (88 wins), and the late Mickey Wright of San Diego, California (85 wins).

Now it will be interesting to see how well Sorenstam does on her return, or if her appearance in Orlando is just a one-time thing. Sorenstam is very familiar with the course, as the Lake Nona Golf & Country Club is her home course.
